Conjugated Estrogens

Description

Conjugated Estrogens is a mixture of estrogen hormones, produced by the ovaries. It is used for the treatment of hormone-mediated disease like osteoporosis, some forms of breast cancers, prostate cancer, etc. It is also used to treat the symptoms of menopause namely hot flashes, vaginal drying, and itching, etc.

What is it prescribed for?

Post menopausal symptoms

This medicine is used to relieve and treat the symptoms experienced after menopause. Most common symptoms include hot flashes and vaginal dryness.

Female hypogonadism

This medicine is used to treat the deficiency of sex hormone due to delayed development of certain glands in females.

Pillative treatment of Breast cancer

This medicine is used to treat certain symptoms in a patient suffering from end-stage cancer of the breast or prostate.

Abnormal uterine bleeding

This medicine is used to treat vaginal bleeding which occurs beyond/irregular menstrual cycles.

Primary ovarian failure

This medicine is used to treat the symptoms of primary ovarian failure which results in low estrogen level in the body and infertility.

Vaginal atrophy

This medicine is used in the treatment of atrophic vaginitis, or vaginal atrophy, which is the thinning of the walls of the vagina caused by decreased estrogen levels.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis

This medicine is also used to prevent and treat the symptoms of osteoporosis in women who have reached menopause.

Pillative treatmant of Prostate Cancer

This medicine is also used for the management of symptoms of prostate cancer.

Breast cancer

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients having breast cancer. It should also not be used if a patient has had breast cancer before or is suspected of having it. Patients having end-stage breast cancer and on palliative care are an exception here.

Liver Disease

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients having an impairment of liver function owing to a disease or other contributing factors.

Estrogen-dependent tumor

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients having cancer which is attributed to abnormal levels of the hormone estrogen in the body for a prolonged duration.

Pregnancy

Use of this medicine is not recommended if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy in immediate future. Contact your doctor if you suspect a pregnancy while being treated with this medicine.

Breast-feeding

This medicine is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking/receiving/using this medicine.

General warnings

Abnormal vaginal bleeding

This medicine should not be given to women having undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding. Appropriate tests should be performed to rule out cancer in all cases of abnormal and persistent bleeding before treatment is initiated.

Breast cancer

Use of this medicine increases the risks of breast cancer and hence should be used at the lowest doses and the duration of treatment should be kept as low as possible.

Kidney Disease

Use of this medicine has been associated with the formation of blood clots especially in the elderly and people with a habit of smoking.

Use in Children

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients below 18 years of age since the safety and efficacy of use are not clinically established.

Jaundice like symptoms

Use of this medicine can cause yellowing of the eyes and skin due to its effect on the liver and the gall bladder. Report the presence of any symptom indicative of jaundice to the doctor on priority. Use of this medicine should be stopped in such cases.

Driving or Operating machinery

Use of this medicine may cause blurred vision or dizziness in some patients. It is advised that you do not perform any activities such as driving a vehicle or operating machinery if you experience any of these symptoms during treatment with this medicine.

Missed Dose

Oral forms: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed dose. Injection: Since this medicine is usually administered by a qualified healthcare professional in the clinical/hospital setting, the likelihood of a missed dose is very low. Cream: Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

Oral forms: Seek emergency medical treatment or contact the doctor in case of an overdose. Injection: Since this medicine is administered in the hospital or clinical setting by a qualified healthcare professional, the likelihood of an overdose is very low. However, emergency medical treatment will be initiated by the doctor if an overdose is suspected. Cream: An overdose of this medicine is not likely to cause severe symptoms unless it is applied for a prolonged period of time in large volumes. However, ingestion of this medicine may cause harm and immediate medical intervention may be required.

Abnormal vaginal bleeding

This medicine should be used with caution if the patient has had an episode of abnormal vaginal bleeding especially if the intended use is for a long duration. It is advised to undergo a diagnostic test to ascertain the reason for the abnormal bleeding. Conditions like endometrial hyperplasia should be ruled out before starting the therapy with estradiol.

Estrogen-dependent tumor

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients having a tumor caused due to abnormal levels of estrogen in the body. The tumor may be of the endometrium or the breasts. Suitable diagnostic tests should be performed before starting treatment with estradiol.

Hypertension

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients having high blood pressure. The risk of adverse effects on the heart and blood vessels are extremely high in such cases. Suitable dose adjustment and safety monitoring is a must in such cases.

Hepatic neoplasms

Use of this medicine is not recommended if the patient has cancer of the liver is suspected of having it. Your doctor may decide the best course of treatment after assessing the condition.
