Description

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is a combination of Atenolol and Amlodipine. It is an anti-hypertensive medicine used for the treatment of high blood pressure. This medicine works by relaxing the blood vessels, making the blood flow easily, thus lowering blood pressure. Amtas-AT 25 Tablet shows common side effects like swelling in your ankles or feet, headache, sleepiness, dizziness, tiredness, and upset stomach. Most of these are temporary and usually resolve with time. Amtas-AT 25 Tablet can be taken with or without food. The dose will be decided by your doctor. Do not stop the treatment abruptly as it can cause unwanted side effects. Inform your doctor about all the medicines and supplements you are taking as this medicine can interact with them and can cause side effects. Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is not used in children below 12 years of age, pregnant and breastfeeding women unless prescribed by your doctor. This medicine is not recommended if you have heart problems that cause a slow heartbeat, abnormal rhythm, or insufficient pumping of the blood as it can worsen your condition. If you have any pre-existing kidney and liver problems and other medical conditions, inform your doctor about them.

What is it prescribed for?

Mild to moderate hypertension

Hypertension (increased blood pressure) can cause damage to blood vessels leading to heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and other problems. Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is used in the treatment of high blood pressure which may be caused by genetic or environmental factors.

Chronic stable angina

Chronic stable angina is a type of chest pain that occurs when your heart is working hard to get more oxygen, such as during exercise. The pattern of pain remains stable for at least two months. Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is used in the treatment of chronic stable angina characterized by shortness of breath, chest pain episodes, pain that spreads to other areas, etc.

Allergy

Cardiogenic shock

Cardiogenic shock is a sudden life-threatening condition in which your heart is not able to pump enough oxygen-rich blood to meet your body's needs. Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is not recommended for use in such conditions as this medicine weakens the contractions of your heart and slows down the heart rate, which further depresses your heart functions and lowers your blood pressure.

Heart block greater than first degree

Heart block is a condition where the heart beats very slowly or with an abnormal rhythm.Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is not recommended for use if you have a heart block greater than first degree as this medicine weakens contractions of your heart and slows down the heart rate, which can deteriorate your condition.

Sinus bradycardia

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is not recommended for use if you have sinus bradycardia (a slow type of heartbeat). This medicine can affect the electrical impulses that regulate the heart functioning resulting in excessively low blood pressure.

Pregnancy

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is not recommended for use in pregnancy as it can harm your developing foetus. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy while on this medication. Take this medicine only if prescribed by your doctor.

General warnings

Hypotension

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet should be taken with caution if you have hypotension (low blood pressure) as it will further decrease your blood pressure. Also, if you are taking high-dose diuretics (water pills) or are being treated for volume depletion (excess loss of salt and fluid due to severe diarrhea, vomiting, burns and kidney problems) this medicine is not suitable for you.

Coronary artery diseases

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet should be taken with caution if you have coronary artery diseases (a condition where the blood vessels of your heart are damaged, mainly due to the build-up of plaque) as it may affect the functioning of your heart and worsen your condition. Your doctor will suggest tests to regularly monitor the functioning of your heart while you are on this medication.

Kidney disease

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet should be taken with caution if you have pre-existing kidney problems. This medicine may get accumulated in your kidneys and damage them further. Your doctor will suggest tests to regularly monitor your kidney function.

Use in children

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is not recommended for use in children below 12 years of age since the safety and efficacy of use are not clinically established.

Heart failure

Heart failure occurs when your heart muscle is not able to pump blood normally. Amtas-AT 25 Tablet may further weaken the contractions of your heart and slow down the heart rate. Hence it has to be used cautiously if you have heart failure. Your doctor will closely monitor your heart function while you take this medicine.

Major surgery

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet can interact with anaesthesia and excessively lower your blood pressure. Furthermore, this medicine also affects heart functioning, which is not suitable for major surgery. This medicine is usually stopped for some days before and after the surgery. Inform your doctor about this medicine if you plan to undergo any kind of surgery.

Diabetes

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet should be taken with caution if you have diabetes as it may mask symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) such as tremors, tachycardia (increased heart rate), and blood pressure changes. Your doctor may either adjust your dose or check your blood sugar levels frequently to use this medicine safely.

Hyperthyroidism

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet should be taken with caution if you have hyperthyroidism (high levels of thyroxine in the body). Abrupt withdrawal of Amtas-AT 25 Tablet can lead to thyrotoxicosis (an excess of thyroid hormone in the body) and thyroid storm (severe complications of untreated hyperthyroidism). To minimize this risk, your doctor will gradually stop this medicine by reducing doses over a period of 1 to 2 weeks.

Driving or operating machines

Use of Amtas-AT 25 Tablet may cause drowsiness or dizziness, especially at the beginning of the therapy. Hence, avoid performing activities that require high mental alertness like driving or operating machines unless you know how Amtas-AT 25 Tablet affects you.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take the dose of Amtas-AT 25 Tablet at a given time, then take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

Never take more than the prescribed dose. If you have intentionally or accidentally consumed more than the prescribed amount of Amtas-AT 25 Tablet, then you might feel headache, confusion, fever, change in the heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, etc. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice these symptoms.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can cause blindness due to an increase in intraocular pressure (increased pressure inside your eyeballs). Amtas-AT 25 Tablet should be taken with caution if you are taking medicines to treat glaucoma as this medicine may further lower the pressure within your eyes.

Food interactions

Consumption of grapefruit juice is not recommended during treatment with Amtas-AT 25 Tablet. Grapefruit juice can increase the level of absorption of this medicine in your blood. This could lead to excessive lowering of blood pressure or worsen the side effects.

Do not take alcohol while taking this medicine as it can worsen drowsiness. This medicine may cause dizziness, so get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying down position. This medicine can cause sleepiness so do not drive or engage in any activity requiring mental focus unless you know how this medicine affects you. If you experience any side effects that persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

How it works

Amtas-AT 25 Tablet is composed of Atenolol and Amlodipine. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and relaxes the heart muscles and the blood vessels by preventing contractions and improves blood flow. Atenolol is a beta-blocker that blocks the action of certain substances on the heart. It causes the heart to beat slowly and with less force, which lowers blood pressure. It also causes relaxation of the blood vessels to improve blood flow.
