A counselling psychologist is a specialist who is involved in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with psychological issues by psychotherapy. They also treat people with emotional, and mental health symptoms to improve their overall well-being across all stages of life.

Some of the disorders treated by a counselling psychologist include:
Depression
Anxiety
Bipolar disorder
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
Eating disorders
Addiction
Obsessive-compulsive disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Panic attacks

The work of a counselling psychologist and behavioural therapist may overlap, but they are not the same. A behavioural therapist deals with mental health disorders in individuals. They try to bring about desirable behaviors and eliminate the negative or unwanted ones. A counselling therapist is more focused on the interpersonal relations of people.

A counselling psychologist usually works in locations such as hospitals, mental health clinics, psychiatric hospitals, and schools. Some may work in academic places as professors or researchers. They may even have their independent clinic.

A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) or Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree is needed to be a counselling psychologist.
