Simple answer is it depends on the indications.
category 1—immediate threat to life (maternal or fetal)in less than 30 minutes; category 2—maternal or fetal compromise that is not immediately life-threatening; category 3—needing early delivery but no maternal or fetal compromise or category 4—delivery at the convenience of the patient or obstetric team.
A caesarean is considered elective if in category 4. Elective caesarean is best performed after 39 weeks of pregnancy e.g. for a breech baby, previous 2 caesareans(mind you previous one caesarean in most of the cases may get a normal delivery) etc.
