I am a 16-year-old boy and on my recent visit to the dentist’s, I discovered I had a decayed tooth. I was surprised because I brushed and flossed twice every day and this was a shocking thing to me. I want to know what the causes of tooth decay are and learn what wrong I had done in my oral hygiene routine.

There are many causes for tooth decay, starting from the tooth. Structure of the tooth (weak enamel causes caries) Shape of the tooth (deep fissure) Alignment of the tooth ( space between the tooth or overlapping may cause cavity) Next what you eat. Avoid sugary diet, any sticky food, acidic food, carbonated drinks. Frankly speaking all modern era foods, in some way helps the development of caries. So you won't enjoy your modern food 🤐. To some extent you can prevent caries. Brush your teeth twice a day. Brush your teeth properly (it is not about how long you brush. It is about how you brush)🤷‍♂️brush your teeth in vertical motion or consult a dentist for proper technique. Avoid food sticking your teeth. Avoid any home practices that cause rough surface to the tooth. (Caries tend to occur more in rough surface than a smooth enamel) I hope this would be enough. Happy smiling 😁

If decay has already started it may go on increasing even if you brush and floss daily. It is advisable you get a regular dental check up once every 6 months so that if there is a cavity your dentist can advise you to fill it.
