My wife(36 yrs) is getting occasionally respiratory problem and uneasiness in the chest 4-5 times in last two months. It happens mostly at the night time, and lasts for 1-2 hours. The blood pressure at that time was around 140/90. There is no genetic asthma history or high blood pressure history. We consulted cardio specialist and there was no problem in ECG report. No problems with blood reports - ESR, glucose etc. We consulted general physician and he diagnosed as anxiety disorder and prescribed nexito 5 mg and czep h. The medication has started for last 3 days and after the medication my wife is feeling abnormal dreams, suicidal thoughts etc. My question is: is it the side effects of the drugs? Shall we consult a psychiatrist?

Excessive palpitation, breathlessness, choking sensation with a sense of impending doom are often described by individuals suffering from anxiety disorder, specifically panic. But a thorough investigation as well as session with a psychiatrist is surely warranted as there are often elements of depression and other conditions too. More than side effects, it may just be the continuation of the previous symptoms.

You surely will have to consult a psychiatrist as she would need full evaluation to understand the nature of her anxiety problem, severity and the impact, based on which appropriate treatment is determined. If any potential medical causes have been ruled out, then anxiety symptoms are treated using psychological therapy like cognitive behavior therapy, relaxation, lifestyle modifications, addressing any underlying stresses and occasionally medicines are used too if appropriate. Anxiety disorders are fairly common and are treatable
