I have severe tooth pain in the left down molar. I have consulted a doc and she told it's due to pus formation and asked to extract a tooth.

Which is the tooth that you are talking about???? If it is the third molar or the wisdom tooth, extraction is normally the best approach for permanent relief from the symptoms because it is considered more or less a non functional structure in the mouth. But if it is any other tooth other than the third molar the treatment should be aimed at saving the tooth rather than going for extraction unless the tooth is Irreversible damaged and beyond repair. But this is a tentative suggestion without a look at the clinical picture of the tooth or the X-ray of that tooth. If you can post a clinical photograph of the affected tooth or better still, an x-ray, it will be putting us in a better situation to give you a more rational suggestion about your problem. Modern dentistry has many techniques and materials to save even some of the badly damaged teeth and extraction is always the last option of choice for teeth other than third molars. Regards.
