I also have high uric acid. I have been referred to a rheumatologist. What can this be? Can it be rheumatoid arthritis or gout?

Hypothyroidism ( increased TSH level ) in itself is responsible for joint pains and swelling. However since you mentioned increased uric acid, it could be indeed one of the causes. To evaluate joint pain and swelling we need to take a proper history on the basis of which we decide what is the exact cause which also includes Rheumatoid Arthritis as one. If you could confirm the timing of the swelling it could help me provide some more cues to diagnose.
Next Steps
1. X Ray of Hands 2. CBC with ESR 3. Serum Uric Acid 4. RA factor Get these tests done to have a clearer picture. A consult is recommended.
Health Tips
1. Decrease intake of protein rich food 2. Have plentiful water everyday ( minimum 4L/ day during summers ) 3. Avoid incessant use of painkillers before a proper diagnosis 4. Lifestyle modifications : having a healthy BMI, daily exercise and avoidance of smoking/ alcohol consumption 5. Don’t delay the treatment 6. After a diagnosis is made, a treatment plan can be chalked out which includes medicines and Physiotherapy Hope this helps ! Take care :)
