What is the size of the defect? Have they mentioned to you how much cartilage has been lost over the joint surface?
When you say you are not able to walk, is this due to pain or due to the ankle giving way and collapsing? Does this happen all the time or only infrequently?
The above questions are important in determining whether surgery is what is needed. Sometimes the fragment or defect is so small that no medical intervention is needed.
If you are worried and still have significant restriction of lifestyle due to the Pain, the please seek a second opinion for this.
Before deciding to proceed with surgery, always remember any surgery carries an element of risk, however small it may be.
I hope this helps.
