Steroids and blood sugar

How long does steroids keep blood sugar level elevated. My mother had Hba1c 6.5 before covid. After covid it came as 6.9 due to steroids use. We started Metformin 500mg twice based on doctors advise. After 6 days of steroids use her fasting blood sugar on glucometer has come as 106. Should we worry about uncontrolled diabetes ? Is is under control ?

First of all Hba1c is control of 3 months sugar....it does not depend upon any slight variation of sugar recently.in ur case though it is due to steroid use but it can also due stress induced because of covid...it is normal at present in this value nothing to worry that much.
Next Steps
keep regular sugar monitoring...do exercise

If fasting blood sugar is 106 then it is slightly raised If hba1c was 6.5 before starting steroids then she was glucose intolerant that means she has chances of having diabetes hence metformin would work fine Also sugar due to steroids sometimes might take few weeks to come back to original

HB1ac Level indicates the blood sugar in past three month so this raised level could not be attributed totally towards their steroid use and it’s not under control. Change in the diabetic medication will be needed to overcome this since your blood sugar is not under control. Steroids affect the blood sugar till then they are not cleared out from the body
