Spine MRI with a implant in thigh

Hello, I have a question related to spine MRI. My father (75yrs) has a pain in lower back and ortho doctor suggested a MRI of his spine. My father has an implant in this thigh (bone fracture and steel plate implant is used) that was operated 10 years back. I would like to know if spine MRI can be done with the presence of implant in his body. Some say it cannot be done and some says it can be done. Hence, needed a clarification. Now a day advance mri machine can do mri with steel implant.. They will give buzzer to patient, if any issue arises, than patient can use buzzer anytime to  stop machine
