Sleeping possible both on  tummy and face down position are same, we call it as prone position . Still if you have doubts, get teleconsultation with your treating surgeon for the same

According to your lesion site in retina, doctor says to sleep in that position to cover that lesion So you should not compare to your relatives position.he might be having other site of lesion. Please follow the instructions of your treating doctor
