Corticosteroids are safely administered as intranasal metered dose sprays in minute doses(each puff containing about 50 micrograms of the medicine).
Oral administration is highly inefficient as only 2% of the medicine reaches the targeted site and the rest cause unnecessary side effects elsewhere in the body.
Oral steroids however do have a role to play in treating severe sinonasal polyps but at a much higher dosage for a very short period just to drastically reduce the inflammation as an emergency treatment. I am afraid your doctor's timid usage of such a powerful tool may not benefit you but instead cause unwanted side effects as you suspected.
