Retinitis pigmentosa

My father-in-law has retinitis pigmentosa and completely blind my husband have not shown any symptoms yet. Is it possible that our children will also have this disease even if my husband does not have it? My husband is 28 is it possible for him to still develop the disease???

Hi.. Yes retinitis pigmentosa is hereditary and can skip one generation and manifest again . The disease can be mild also . Unfortunately, from treatment point , nothing much is available. But do not panick!  may be you are lucky ..and it wont manifest. For this, genetic counseling can help . They can be available in big hospitals or Eye Institutes.

Yes,  your children can get it even if your husband doesn't. Yes, your husband may have the disease.. its onset is usually in the 30s.

Please ask your husband to consult an Ophthalmologist immediately so that RP can be ruled out.
