Query on DHEAS test

Hi Doctors, My baby had a couple of screening tests on day 31 of his birth (he was born at 35th week). There DHEAS came very high 1426 ug/dl. Others test like plasma renin activity, electrolytes, testosterone & others test for metabolic disorders was normal. 17 ohp came a little high 11.8 ng/ml (range 0 - 8 ng/ml). Now the baby is 8 months old, growing well and till now no abnormal symptoms. Kindly suggest if DHEAS report is concerning and if we need to do anything now.

High DHEA and 17 OH P may indicate Congenital adrenal Hyperplasia. You should consult a pediatrician and pediatric endocrinologist for further evaluation for the same. May need some ultrasound scans, genital examination, and genetic investigation if needed.

Hi.High DHEAS (Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate) levels are normal and expected in newborns due to the adrenal glands being very active, but these levels rapidly decrease within the first few days to weeks of life, settling to low prepubertal ranges before rising again in puberty. If high DHEAS persists in a neonate beyond the initial period, or if other symptoms arise, it might signal conditions like Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia which require further evaluation
