Parkinson’s, Anxiety, and Hearing/Speech

2025-11-14 18:59:02
I need guidance regarding my father. He is diabetic and recently had very high sugar in august month, but after hospital treatment everything is under control now. He has ongoing hearing and speech problems since a severe high-sugar episode two years ago, and now he walks slowly with leg stiffness. He also has frequent BP fluctuations. One doctor suggested Parkinson’s and prescribed Syndopa 110 mg, but he has no tremors, so we are unsure. He becomes very nervous even with minor issues and keeps asking to see different doctors. Earlier, after his first high-sugar episode two years ago, his diabetic doctor had given him anxiety medication, but he stopped taking it about six months before this recent sugar spike in August. Could you please advise whether his symptoms suggest Parkinson’s, what tests we should do to confirm it, and what can be done to improve his hearing, speech, anxiety, and overall condition?

Your father's symptoms suggest Parkinson's disease complicated by diabetic complications: **Diagnostic Confirmation:** 1. Get DaTscan or MRI brain to confirm Parkinson's 2. Syndopa 110mg without tremors is unusual - need neurologist reassessment 3. Check: BP monitoring (orthostatic hypotension), HbA1c, renal function 4. Audiometry for hearing loss 5. Speech therapy evaluation **Management:** 1. Continue Syndopa if confirmed Parkinson's - dosage may need adjustment 2. Speech and occupational therapy 3. Physical therapy for gait/leg stiffness 4. Optimize diabetes control - prevent future complications 5. Consider hearing aids 6. Manage anxiety - counseling/medications if needed **Tests to Confirm:** - Neurological examination by movement disorder specialist - Brain imaging (MRI/DaTscan) - Complete metabolic panel The anxiety, hearing/speech issues, and slow walking could all be related to poorly controlled diabetes and possible Parkinson's.

High sugar could have affected his brain function. Now since his sugar is in control, brain function will take time to recover. Meanwhile medication for Parkinson’s will help reduce the symptoms. Also ensure proper diabetic control . Keep him regularly examined by physician

Fortunately Parkinson’s (even if he did have some symptoms of it) is usually not a rapidly changing condition. Good diabetic and blood pressure control is the key. Get his blood pressure checked when he is lying down and then when he is standing up to ensure there is no significant drop in his blood pressure which can cause problems with walking. Make sure his feet are regularly checked as diabetes affects the nerves in the feet and can also cause problems with walking. Get his Vitamin D and B12 blood tests checked in case they are low which can also contribute to his problems. Hope he is not drinking alcohol as that makes things worse. See a Physiotherapist nearby to get some strength and balance exercises he can use to get better. Get your local doctor to check his ears for wax in case that is why he can’t hear properly. Find out if there is a Speech Therapist in your area who can assess his speech difficulties further. All the best. J G S R
