Pain in left testicle

My friend is having pain in his left testicle a sharp pain. No other symptoms like swelling or fever or nausea. A sharp pain that comes and goes . He is suffering from this for a few days now. Pains often during the day and night and goes away slowly. Cold compress or masturbating didn't help. What could be this ? Any suggestions? Is it serious ?

Testis pain can be caused due to multiple problems like local infection, trauma, stones in urinary tract( referred pain). Detailed history and investigation may be needed to reach diagnosis.
