Thank you for your question.
Any abdominal scar goes through a series of stages when healing. The integrity of the joint gets tested on a daily basis because of regular activity. It can take up to a year for complete scar remodelling to take place. Every exercise you do to tone the abdominal muscles helps influence this modelling process. I would suggest that strengthening abdominal muscles needs to be done within the threshold of pain. If you feel pain you need to stop at that moment and do the exercise just before that did not cause pain. There is no benefit in persevering through pain when you have had surgery and it could be harmful too. So do continue gentle exercise to tone the muscles (this means that the length of the muscle does not change but it contracts and relaxes without pulling on the attachments) you may ask your physiotherapist for guidance on the correct way to do them.
I hope this answers your query. I'm pleased you are serious about your exercise routine. All the very best.
