What you read online is technically true, but it needs proper clinical context. The p24 antigen is a structural protein that forms the core of the
HIV virus. During an early infection, this antigen floods your bloodstream as the virus replicates rapidly, peaking well before your body even begins making antibodies.
Because of this, a modern 4th Generation Combo Test (Ag/Ab) can indeed pick up the p24 antigen as early as 11 to 14 days post-exposure. However, the accuracy at this ultra-early stage is not 100%. If viral replication is a bit slower in your body, the antigen levels might still be just below what the lab equipment can detect, which could lead to a false reassurance. The test becomes highly accurate (around 95%) at 28 days and is considered completely conclusive at 45 days according to international guidelines."
Next Steps
Testing at 11–14 Days (Early Detection): "If you are currently in this 11-to-14-day window and facing severe anxiety or experiencing flu-like symptoms, you can absolutely go ahead and take a 4th Generation
HIV Combo (ELISA/CMIA) test now. If it comes back positive, it successfully catches the infection early; if it is negative, it is highly reassuring but requires a final check."
