So basically escitalopram (or any other antidepressant class of medications) take a couple of weeks to reach their maximum affect, and that is why your psychiatrist has asked to wait for a few weeks. Secondly, these medications can increase anxiety in some patients in the initial days of therapy, which is their normal side affect and usually becomes better by week 2 of treatment.
