Since you previously had Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and underwent Thyroidectomy followed by Radioactive Iodine Therapy, the good news is that this type of thyroid cancer is generally not a contraindication for using Mounjaro (Tirzepatide). The warning with Mounjaro and similar drugs mainly concerns Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma or people with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2, which are different conditions. Therefore, if your cancer was papillary type and you have been disease-free since 2018, starting Mounjaro for weight loss is generally considered acceptable, provided your thyroid cancer follow-up is stable.
Next Steps
Before starting the medication, it is advisable to: • Confirm your recent thyroid follow-up tests, especially Thyroglobulin Test and TSH Test, to ensure there is no recurrence. • Discuss the plan with your endocrinologist to review your current dose of Levothyroxine after thyroidectomy. • Start Mounjaro gradually with the lowest dose and monitor for common side effects like nausea, constipation, or reduced appetite.
Health Tips
• Maintain adequate hydration and fiber intake, as medications like Mounjaro can sometimes cause constipation. • Combine the medication with regular physical activity and balanced diet for sustainable weight loss. • Continue annual thyroid cancer surveillance, even if you have been stable for many years. If you would like, you can book an online consultation and share your latest thyroid reports and weight goals, and I can help you decide whether starting Mounjaro is appropriate and how to use it safely.
