Minoxidil may cause Hairloss in the 1st 4 weeks because of its mode of action. In simple terms, it sheds the damaged hair fast, so that better hair growth is seen afterwards.
You have to do atleast a monthly follow up with your dermatologist to alter the treatment as per required, as Minoxidil comes in different concentration.
Also, Doing on and off treatment, having gaps in between will not give proper result.
Minoxidil is the only molecule in the world which has sufficient evidence to reduce hairfall. But it has to be used under proper guidance.
