It depends on the region in the neck. But usually subcentimetric (less than 1cm) nodes are not harmful unless they grow rapidly or any superadded changes like consistency etc.,
If it is a benign node then have to look for any dental caries or any other infection around. Treat the infection. If all infective and immunological causes are ruled out with history and examination by a doctor, then it can be left alone.
