HI. That's a good question. There are several causes of low platelet count. These causes can be differentiated based on age and symptoms. A fever along with low platelets may be seen with malaria, dengue, and some other infections. A low platelet count without fever may be seen with high blood counts may be with some red blood tumors. This can cause the bone marrow cells to increase and suppress the platelet production.
