Lock knee for a month

Trauma while playing caused the dislocation of my patella a month back. I'm a medical student myself. I got an MRI done which indicates a flap tear of my medial meniscus. I've gone to an doctor and he tells me to be in conservative treatment. I haven't been able to flex my leg for a month. My muscles are wasting. I don't know what to do. I've been advised rest. But, I'm scared it won't help. Should I go for an arthroscopic surgery?

Avoid sitting Cross legged. Avoid Squatting- Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams Stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports Taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area Contrast Fomentation (Hot and Cold).

In the background of a flap tear of meniscus and locking of knee I would advice initially sufficient painkillers and rehab. But of those have been tried and they have not helped or if the pain is getting worse, then the only other option is to proceed with surgery. You will need to undergo arthroscopy of the knee for trimming of the meniscal tear. Hope this helps. Dr Vinu Raj Consultant Spine Surgeon MBBS MRCS FRCS(Trauma&Orth)
