Hello I am Dr. Sumanto Bagchi. I will try to answer your query. Pain in jaw bone is related to several causes or reasons. It may be a manifestation of long standing or recent history of trauma or injury on the affected side or chin. It can happen if she fell face first or hit by a blow to the cheek on the affected side. Secondly jaw pain or TM joint pain can also occur if there is any uneven filling or high points in a crown placed in any one or more teeth in her mouth. This unevenness can lead to unbalanced opposite jaw contacts when she closes her mouth thereby resulting in TM joint ache. Thirdly it may not be exactly the joint that is aching but the muscles tissues surrounding the joint. Myofacial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPDS) is a kind of muscle pain which can mimic jaw pain or wisdom tooth related pain. Fourthly jaw or jaw joint pain or clicking can also be a manifestation of developing arthritis or rheumatic disorder but of course the above two diseases will show manifestation in other joints of the body as well. At last joint pain also sometime seems to occur if any wisdom tooth which has not completely erupted gets infected along with surrounding tissues. There may be several other reasons for this problem so identifying the exact cause is important in deciding on the line of treatment. So it is in your friends best interest to visit a dental practitioner and get a few investigations such as opg etc done so that appropriate treatment can be started.
