Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you may have had a recent exacerbation to your otherwise previously well controlled IBS. Not uncommon these days given the precarious nature of our world we are currently living in.
As far as the treatment goes, the first line is establishment of the clinician-patient relationship and continuity of care are critical to the management of all patients with IBS. In patients with mild and intermittent symptoms, I do not recommend using pharmacologic therapy for initial management. I begin with lifestyle and dietary modification (eg, exclusion of gas-producing foods; a diet low in fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols; and in select cases, lactose and gluten avoidance). Only in folks not responding to above measures, I may recommend a trial of pharmacologic agents for two to four weeks. I hope that was somewhat helpful. All the best!
