Any substance addiction will have various consequences- physical and psychological. It can cause severe damage to routine functioning of the individual. Given substances surge Dopamine in certain brain regions commonly known as reward circuits/areas, individual feel compelled to consume the substances to attain its pleasurable effect. Eventually tolerance to dose develops and consumption eventually increases.
Thus any attempt to stop will reproduce physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms. In case of alcohol it can trembling of body, nausea, headache, inattention, craving, gait disturbances, weakness, fatigue, low mood, irritability etc etc.
On an attempt to completely stop, one may experience severe anxiety, withdrawal seizure and even delirium can precipitate.
