Hardened Skin on Foot sole

Hello, I have a hardened skin in part of my sole which was in my foot for a year now. But recently i feel pain when I stand for a long time or give pressure on that part of foot. I want to understand what's the cause, is it harmful, should it be removed ? How easy is the removal ( would there be any post removal issues). Thank You!!
