Food allergy with breathing difficulties

2026-10-31 13:16:04
I’m a 25-year-old female. At age 7, after blood tests, my doctor advised me to avoid chicken, potatoes, and a few other foods. Eating chicken or potatoes causes rashes and swelling in my arms or legs. Eggs previously caused acid reflux, but twice this month, immediately after eating an omelette, I experienced sudden breathlessness and severe coughing for a few minutes. Overtime eating chicken had less reactions so I was fine , but recently even for chicken I'm experiencing food allergy as well. I also have a history of asthma. 1. Could this be a serious food allergy or anaphylaxis? 2. What allergy tests should I undergo? 3. Should I consult an allergist or pulmonologist first? Looking for advice on appropriate investigations and precautions.

At this time, you can consult an allergist for a clinical examination and investigations including IgE and other specific allergy tests. Allergies and asthma frequently co-exist ,share  immune system mechanisms ,allergy can trigger asthma flare up.

Your reactions are spreading to more foods over time, and now include breathlessness and coughing right after eating. This does suggest a worsening food allergy. Your asthma history raises the risk of a more serious reaction. This isn't full-blown anaphylaxis yet, since that usually also brings throat or facial swelling or a drop in blood pressure, but it is moving in that direction and needs proper testing.
Next Steps
See an allergist or doctor for skin prick or blood IgE testing to confirm your current triggers, since these can change over time as yours have. Keep your asthma reviewed alongside this too.
Health Tips
If a reaction ever brings throat tightness, lip or face swelling, dizziness or fainting, treat it as an emergency and get to a hospital right away.
