Extreme pain post hernia surgery.

My wife just had her hernia removed and is experiencing "extreme" pain. The medicine the doctor prescribed is vicodin, which is not helping and is causing extreme stomach acid type of pain. Any suggestion. She is a nurse and suggest I see if she has stress ulcers. Your opinion please?
