Aphthous ulcers are also called as recurrent aphthous ulcers because you will seldom find a patient who has had only a single episode.
Being recurrent and being multiple is characteristic feature of aphthous ulcers. They will not appear on the same spot again and again and they might be different in size also every time. Based on the size, they are called as minor or major apthae.
Temporary symptomatic relief can be achieved by using anaesthetic ointments like dologel CT or any ointment containing benzocaine or lignocaine. They usually will take 7 to 10 days for healing and the recurrence depends upon precipitating factors such as stress, improper nutrition, traumatic injuries or endocrine (hormonal) changes.
