Hello, I was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma this year and had undergone right hemithyroidectomy only without any radiation or chemotherapy. I am completely free of cancer now, but I would like to know if people with thyroid cancer can develop leukemia in their later lives, or do the chance increases to have leukemia. In 2015 I had rheumatic fever and would get bruise like spots as well, and I had completed 5yrs penicillin course till 2020. I used to get bruises still,my mother also has them since we both are anemic. Last yr I had stopped getting them, but recently in 2 months painless little bruises have formed again. My family has no history of leukemia, but my grandfather had lunch cancer. 3 months ago, I had done a blood test, my RBC was 11.7, Neutrophil was 73, Lymphocyte was 24 and Platelet was 2.38 I had done a blood test 2 days ago, my RBC is 12.2, Neutrophil is 62, Lymphocyte is 33 and Platelet is 1.66. I am currently taking Eltroxin 50mcg Kindly help.

Hello Please don't worry You are not at any increased risk of leukemia than any normal person Just keep a check on your thyroid levels and continue periodic followup with your surgeon Or else don't worry at all

Thyroid cancer and leukaemia is not related . I will not tell that you will not develop leukaemia. You may. But not related to ca thyroid. Some syndrome is there where ca thyroid and leukaemia can occur.
Next Steps
I think you should do a thyroid scan to rule out any distant metastasis.
Health Tips
Hope it will help.

There is no such association of thyroid cancer and leukemia unless you do Radio iodine therapy for thyroid cancer. If only surgery had been done, then you don't need to worry. Please do regular follow ups for Papillary thyroid cancer. Thank you

Hi, There is no such association between papillary thyroid carcinoma and leukemia, or with such family history of lung cancer. You are likely having that risk of leukemia just as any other person would have. However, for PTC you need to be on followup for a while with help of Ultrasound at regular intervals (3 or 6 monthly) to look at other side thyroid lobe abnormality or new abnormal lymph nodes
Next Steps
Ultrasound neck for Papillary thyroid carcinoma followup
