Hi, I am Dr. Atul Kumar Nimawat MS ENT
Ear blockage with occasional irritation is most commonly due to wax accumulation, minor canal irritation, or sometimes Eustachian tube dysfunction. You are already using Soliwax, which is a wax-softening drop, and that is appropriate for symptomatic relief. Other alternatives available include Otiwax ear drops, which contain benzocaine and softening agents, and preparations with carbamide peroxide (such as Debrox or its generic equivalents like Ceruklin, Clearwax, or Waxonil), which help in breaking down and softening impacted wax. Natural remedies such as olive oil or mineral oil can also be used to gently soften earwax. However, all these should be avoided if there is ear discharge, pain, or a suspected perforation of the eardrum. Persistent blockage, recurrent irritation, hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, or any ear discharge warrants an ENT consultation, where safe ear cleaning under direct vision can be performed. In the meantime, you should avoid inserting cotton buds or sharp objects into the ear canal and keep the ears dry.
