Greetings,  sorry about the pain. You had mentioned disc prolapse but you failed to mention what activities increases your mother's pain.  In the first place disc prolapse not necessarily needs surgery.  If can be corrected without surgery. The reason you get disc prolapse is due to poor flexibility between hip and thigh. You can skip surgery. Surgery still reduces flexibility and your mother will lose bending motion.  Nature has a reason to have disc and for no reason you are supposed to remove disc. Surgery is an unnecessary protocol, give it a miss.
Next Steps
hire a physio for your mother and get trigger point therapy,  massage and improve flexibility at back plus core stability, in 2-3 months your mother will be back to her normal.
Health Tips
if you have any queries please do contact me.  if for various reasons you can't find a physio or problem still persist just get your mother for consultation will guide you. recovery is guaranteed without surgery

See if you ve already tried medicines and physio, surgery is a very good option..esp in today's scenario it's very safe...for key hole vs open, it's better to leave it to your surgeon ..both have specific indications...the idea is to decompress the nerves which ever method surgeon will do it best
