He needs to be taken to a psychiatrist where the diagnosis can be confirmed and treatment started accordingly. Depression in old age is pretty common and can increase the burden of distress for the patient as well as for the family. The sooner the treatment starts, the better.

Consult a Psychiatrist for a detailed assessment. It is likely with medication and counselings the symptoms will improve. If he is feeling suicidal or hopeless consult a Psychiatrist immediately.
