Uncontrolled Diabetes can affect the eye in the form of early cataract (earlier than normal population) or Diabetic Retinopathy/ Maculopathy ( Due to microvascular abnormalities or new blood vessels formation). Even if the Diabetes is under control, the duration of Diabetes (Say more than 15 to 20 years) also affects the eye. So the best way to deal with it is Strict control of Diabetes and Annual Dilated Retina Examination and Slit lamp examination. By this we can pick any early change and treat in time to avoid progression as well as any further damage to the eye.
