Lamotrigine is a drug usually added to a prescription when primary molecules like SSRI/SNRI have been tried and not responsive or needs augmentation after partial response.
Though molecules like lithium and lamotrigine can also be considered as single molecule prescription in some cases like seasonal depression.
Lamotrigine is started at a low dose 12.5 to 25 mg and gradually build to adequate doses. A dose of 100-200 milligrams is adequate if targeting depression. Maximum dose could go up to 300-500 mg, though not routinely prescribed.
Health Tips
Lamotrigine can cause life threatening side effect like Steven Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, should be immediately stopped if rashes of any sort observed in body.
