I think depression is a cause of a series of thought patterns that are self critical and negative. It's a constant cycle of one bad thought followed by another till it becomes so big that you feel it's impossible to go forward. In some cases you might even get anxiety attacks wherein your entire body starts getting numb ( happened to me).
The key is that you have to change the way you look at things ( perception). There's always two ways to see same thing - go for the optimistic way.
Start paying attention to your thought pattern. Watch when do you start getting derailed. What are the triggers ? Unless you know your own demons ,you can't conquer them. Meditation helps a lot in this case. It makes you aware of yourself.
Start appreciating nature. If you hear a bird chirping - pay attention to it. Try to feel the breeze and the soft smell of flowers. If you are depressed it is likely that you have forgotten all of this which makes life beautiful.
Read books that are filled with life. I read âThe Alchemistâ , if you have a spiritual taste as well, you can go for books like
âThe Autobiography of a Yogiâ - Paramhansa Yogananda
âLiving with the Himalayan Mastersâ - Swami Ram
âGospels of Sri Ramakrishnaâ
I think these books are life changing and the only cure to depression. I've lost count of how many I have read them. You pick up a new lesson everytime you read them.
Finally there's one thing that nobody usually says but it personally gave me liberation from depression and made me optimistic and positive. You know it's easy to say - change the way you think but not that easy to do. There's not a pill you can take to change the way you think or perceive.
What I did was , I started with mantra chanting while I was meditating. I started waking up early and meditated everyday for 1.5 hrs for about 9 months and it completely changed me. I did âGayatri Mantraâ . You decide how long it is comfortable for you and pick up a mantra you can chant. There's nothing spiritual in this actually. These are just sounds and don't belong to any religion.
Try doing all this and let me know if it helped. ( without taking any medications)
