Hi.
Tooth decay is a slow process and pain or sensitivity acts as a warning signal that the tooth needs attention. If there's no pain in your tooth as yet there is a fair chance that the decay/cavity can be managed by filling only.
However the exact situation can be assessed after a clinical examination and an x ray. At times the decay can progress insidiously without pain and may involve the pulp. In such cases the tooth can be saved by root canal treatment.
