Constant yawning

2026-07-07 03:15:19
My 6 year old daughter has started yawning frequently from past couple of weeks, even when she is well rested. She sleeps from 8.30 pm to 6.45 am. Even on days she wake up late also yawns. While having food she stops eating n yawns. While actively playing also. Is this just a temporary habit or anything to be worried?

Hello, If yawning is the only symptom and your child has no other complaints, it is most likely physiological and does not require any intervention. Ensure your child has a balanced diet, stays well hydrated, limits screen time, gets at least 1 hour of physical activity daily, and has adequate, uninterrupted sleep. However, if the yawning is accompanied by persistent daytime sleepiness, lethargy, snoring, restless sleep, pallor or anemia, headache or any other concerning symptoms, it would be advisable to discuss these concerns with your pediatrician for further evaluation.

No need to worry it is just a temporary habit if yawning is the only complaint. Just ensure she sleeps well throughout that period. Increase physical activity. Eat nutritious food.

Greetings. Frequent yawning in a child who sleeps adequately resembles or shares characteristics with a few distinct possibilities, such as a localized respiratory obstruction (like enlarged adenoids), an underlying sleep disorder that fragmentizes sleep quality (like pediatric sleep apnea), or an automatic behavioral tic/habit. To address this properly, a pediatrician may explore general treatment options including adjusting her daily hydration levels, arranging a clinical throat and airway examination

Frequent yawning by itself is usually not a sign of a serious problem, especially if your child is otherwise active and behaving normally. Since it has been happening for around 2 weeks even after good sleep, I would advise a pediatric evaluation to look for common causes such as poor sleep quality (snoring/adenoids), anemia, or a habitual behavior. If she develops headache, vomiting, seizures, weakness, excessive sleepiness, or vision problems, she should be examined urgently.

Nothing to worry it is temporary habit only. Add fruits, dry fruits and vegetables to diet. Reduce screen time if present. 40 minutes of physical active daily.
