Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician.
Your case has been allotted to me.
I understand your concern. Passing hard stool initially followed by softer stool, despite a high-fibre diet and good water intake, is a common sign of functional constipation â meaning the intestines are a bit sluggish or the stool stays longer in the rectum, causing the front part to harden. Since your
sugar,
thyroid, and ultrasound are normal, this is more likely related to bowel habits rather than any disease.
1. Advices
Try to fix a specific toilet timing every morning (preferably 15â20 minutes after breakfast).
Add 1 tablespoon of Isabgol husk (psyllium) in warm water or milk at bedtime daily.
Include natural laxative foods like papaya, soaked raisins, and warm lemon water early morning.
2. What to Monitor
Frequency, consistency, and ease of stool passage.
Any blood in stool or persistent pain while passing stool.
3. Management
Kayam or Zandu Nityam tablets contain herbal laxatives (mainly Senna), which stimulate bowel movement. While occasional use is safe, taking them daily for long periods can make your intestine dependent on them over time, leading to weaker natural bowel contractions.
Itâs better to:
⢠Use them only 2â3 times a week if needed, not every day.
⢠Gradually switch to bulk-forming laxatives like Isabgol or Cremaffin Natural.
⢠For chronic constipation, a mild medicine like Lactulose syrup (15 ml at bedtime) is safer for longer use under medical advice.
4. When to Consult a Doctor Immediately
If constipation persists despite all measures for more than 3 weeks.
If you notice blood, unexplained weight loss, or severe abdominal pain.
Every patientâs situation is unique. With proper hydration, fixed toilet timing, fibre intake, and gradual reduction of stimulant laxatives, your bowel pattern can normalize completely without long-term dependence.
