Cataract & diabetes

My mother in law has been diagnosed with a right eye cataract & she might need surgery but she is diabetic from past 5/6 years & under medication. Her recent blood sugar reading was 310 (fasting) & 450 after food . So can she perform cataract surgery ? Does she need insulin injections? Plz suggest some practical suggestions.

Yes, if she is planned for cataract surgery and her blood sugars are fasting at 300 and postprandial at 400, it is advisable to first control her diabetes. Insulin is the first line of management to control blood sugars and prevent post-operative infections. Once her diabetes is under control, she can proceed with the cataract surgery.

Hi., I can understand your concern. Her sugar levels are high which can increase tension in the eyes. So surgery won't be performed. It should be controlled with combination of insulin and oral medicine. Then only surgery possible.
