Hi... Hypnotherapy is a treatment methodology and it may help bring you some relief and realizations, but if you are expecting a complete recovery using hypnotherapy, it's hard to estimate.
Also, the way you have explained it, suggest early signs and symptoms of depression. The primary trigger of your present issues is basically your struggle with your career (PhD), things you left in the past for it and a negative anticipation of your future, which is causing debilitating anxiety, crying, loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, etc.
CBT, Hypnotherapy, Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic, Existential/Logo Therapy are just different approaches to address various psychological issues. Don't make conclusions about a treatment methodology based on your individual experience with a particular Psychologist/Psychotherapist.
Next Steps
Do not discontinue treatment. Changing the Therapist/Professional is Okay, but dropping the Treatment is not Okay.
