Biting nails and lips

I am a grown up adult now but i have this weird habit of biting my nails. I chew them and sometimes uproot them causing pain. I feel it is involuntary action of me. I have been doing it since childhood and just like other bad habits, i have tried to leave this habit many times. Now i have started to feel that i may be mentally ill. I do not get that motivation for myself to do something. Please suggest.
