Get thorough cleaning done. Especially inside gums and hard to reach areas. Practice tongue brushing and flossing. Tongue can house lots of smell causing bacteria. So practice tongue brushing. And get your teeth checked for any partially erupted wisdom teeth. These areas can house food debris and hence cause smell. Also, check for sinusitis and stomach tract problems.
Next Steps
Get cleaning inside gums and start tongue brushing. Show to dentist to see where food gets trapped, especially if you have partially erupted wisdom teeth.

Tonsillitis is not the only reason for bad breath. What you remove while brushing is the soft layer of plaque but when it becomes hard it is called as Calculus and cannot be removed by brushing alone. It will require professional cleaning by a procedure of ultrasonic scaling so that the gum health can be restored back to normal. Also please understand that mouthwashes do not remove the plaque but only neutralize it to add to the action of the brushing. So they will only cover the problem of bad breath for some time but will not cure it. You should also increase your water intake to maintain proper hydration so that the thickness of The Saliva is decreased, and even that will contribute to a better oral hygiene. Cleaning of the tongue should also be done regularly and only your toothbrush should be used for this purpose and not any tongue cleaner. Regards
