Hello, What you are describing does sound very much like anxiety with panic attacks, and this can commonly happen after going through a distressing medical illness and treatment experience like radioactive iodine therapy for Graves’ disease.
Also, the symptoms of
thyroid imbalance itself — such as palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness, restlessness, and tiredness — can overlap significantly with panic symptoms. After radioactive iodine treatment, thyroid hormone levels can fluctuate for a few weeks to months, and some patients may gradually become hypothyroid, which can also contribute to low mood, fatigue, and a feeling of ‘not being normal like before’.
So it is very important to repeat your thyroid profile (
TSH, FT3, FT4) along with continuing psychiatric treatment.
Since you are already on sertraline 50 mg, please remember that it usually takes around 2–4 weeks, and sometimes up to 6 weeks, to show full benefit for panic and anxiety symptoms. So it is understandable that you may still not feel completely better right now.
The reassuring part is that yes, anxiety and panic attacks are definitely treatable, and most people do recover very well with the right combination of medication and therapy.
Please continue follow-up with both your endocrinologist and psychiatrist, and avoid stopping medicines on your own. You will feel better with time, this phase is temporary and manageable.
