Post-partum anal itching and irritation in the first 1–2 weeks is very common, even when stools are soft. This usually happens due to factors such as mild hemorrhoids (piles), small anal fissures from delivery strain, local skin sensitivity, postpartum sweating/moisture, or irritation from frequent wiping. The good news is that this is treatable and not dangerous, and most new mothers recover fully with simple care.
Next Steps
1. For itching and irritation Apply Lignocaine + Hydrocortisone cream (e.g., Lignocort or Anovate) twice daily for 5–7 days. If the area feels dry or irritated, you may use Sitz bath: Soak your anal area in warm water for 10–15 minutes, twice a day. This gives very quick relief. 2. For comfort during passing stool Even if stool is soft, add Isabgol (psyllium husk) 1 tsp at bedtime with warm water for a few days. This reduces friction and allows smoother passage. Drink enough water (8–10 glasses/day), especially if breastfeeding. 3. Hygiene tips Avoid rubbing or wiping repeatedly. Use soft wet wipes instead of dry toilet paper. Keep the area dry, moisture increases itching. Pat dry after washing. Wear loose cotton underwear.
Health Tips
Seek review if you notice: Persistent bleeding, Severe pain while passing stool (possible fissure), Swelling or lump that worsens
