hi there, ur uncle's problem is pretty common problem. now stopping alcohol completely is the only way to begin with. Certain problems such as anxiety, restlessness, sleep disturbance etc are expected after stopping it as a part of withdrawal symptoms. But these symptoms are transient and usually go away by 2 nd week . Medications are given which take care of these symptoms for the initial duration of 2 weeks. When withdrawal symptoms subside then comes the most important part of relapse prevention and this involves Counselling to keep motivation high. Medications if needed are utilized to address any co-morbid problems. All this requires constant communication and consultation wid a psychiatrist of ur choice. Hope this helps u...feel free to raise further queries. Thank you

Alcohol addiction is a neurobiological phenomenon and requires proper guidance. This includes anticraving drugs, managing initial withdrawal symptoms with medicines and psychotherapy addressing issues specific only to craving, lifestyle changes and family support. Take him to a Psychiatrist for a more successful attempt at abstaining.
