This is an innate human behaviour. However it can land you in trouble and end up making you feel guilty & restless.
The problem with knee jerk reactions is that it shows that we are impulsive and unable to suppress what is on our mind.
I suggest you to begin cognitive behavioural therapy to understand your thinking, emotions and beliefs as well as reaction.
It is a slow but very fruitful process.
